Top 5 Foods That Remind You of Home

1. Chocolate Chip Cookies

Nothing reminds me of home like a warm, fresh batch of my mom's chocolate chip cookies and a tall glass of ice cold milk.  ASU students agreed; coming in at out #1 Food That Reminds Students of Home is Chocolate Chip Cookies.

Recipe for Martha Stewart's Soft and Chewy Chocolate Chip Cookies
Makes about 3 dozen
  • 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, room temperature
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup packed light-brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 cups (about 12 ounces) semisweet and/or milk chocolate chips
Directions
  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In a small bowl, whisk together the flour and baking soda; set aside. In the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, combine the butter with both sugars; beat on medium speed until light and fluffy. Reduce speed to low; add the salt, vanilla, and eggs. Beat until well mixed, about 1 minute. Add flour mixture; mix until just combined. Stir in the chocolate chips.
  2. Drop heaping tablespoon-size balls of dough about 2 inches apart on baking sheets lined with parchment paper.
  3. Bake until cookies are golden around the edges, but still soft in the center, 8 to 10 minutes. Remove from oven, and let cool on baking sheet 1 to 2 minutes. Transfer to a wire rack, and let cool completely. Store cookies in an airtight container at room temperature up to 1 week.

2. Mac & Cheese

This is big news from the blue box hitting # 2 in out poll is Mac & Cheese. Whether it is cooked on the stove top, baked inside the oven or tossed in a microwave Mac & Cheese is the food of College students and children a like. Though there are many variations on Mac & Cheese, like mixing in hot dogs or barbecue sauce like ASU Jr. Kyle Decker does, Mac & Cheese is quick easy and filling. 


3. Apple Juice

Though Apple Juice is not considered a food; it's a beverage, we included it on our count down because of how many kids said it reminded them of Home and being a kid.  Some variations n apple juice could be make a smoothie out of it or ice pops.


Apple Juice Smoothie by Mott's
½ cup of Apple Juice or you could use Apple Grape Juice for a little more flavor
½ cup of nonfat plain yogurt
½ cup of frozen unsweetened mixed berries
Honey to taste

Combine Mott's Plus for Kids' Health, yogurt, and mixed berries in blender; blend until smooth. Sweeten with honey, if desired.         
Makes 1 serving




Apple Juice Fruit Pops
 2 cups of
mixed berries (blueberries and sliced strawberries work )
  2 cups of Apple Juice6 paper cups6 Popsicle sticks Divide diced fruit between cups. Fill evenly with apple juice. Place
cups on level surface in freezer. Freeze until partially frozen, approximately
1 hour. Insert craft stick into center of
each
pop. Freeze until firm.

4. Grilled Cheese

Who doesn't love a good grilled cheese? maybe served with some tomato soup and a little basil. That is how I remember grilled cheese and it always reminds me of my Grandma. ASU Sophomore Jacob Bash said, "I love my grilled cheese with garlic butter spread and lots and lots of cheese! It always reminds me of my mom." As you could imagine there are many variations on grilled cheese but the most important things are using good cheese and good bread. You can even make a gourmet grilled cheese. 5. PB & J

Rounding in our #5 spot nothing beats that classic lunch time sandwich like a PB & J.  ASU Freshman Katie Galle said when she was little her mom always gad peanut butter and jelly made for when she was done playing outside with her brother. She liked it in triangles with the crust cut off.
